Innovate UK Deadline This Week? The Countdown to 11:00am

What to do the week before, the night before, the hour before and the last five minutes. Every rule here comes from UKRI's own guidance for applicants and current competition briefs.

My Innovate UK competition closes this week. What should I do?

Treat the deadline as 11:00am UK time on the closing day, not the end of the day. Most Innovate UK competitions close then, the system shuts automatically, and late submissions caused by your own internet or equipment are not considered. Work backwards. The week before, get every partner to accept their invitation, which they have 48 hours to do, enter their own project costs and accept the terms and conditions. Only they can, and an unfinished partner section is not grounds for an extension. The night before, mark every section complete, check each answer against the brief's word limit, and convert appendices to PDFs within its size and page limits. In the hour before 11:00am, submit: you can reopen and resubmit until the deadline if you spot a mistake. If the system fails, contact Innovate UK before the deadline so the issue is logged. In the last five minutes, change nothing.

The week before

Get everything that depends on other people finished.

  • Invite every partner now. They have 48 hours to accept the invitation and must create or sign in to their own Innovation Funding Service account. Tell them to check junk and spam folders.
  • Each partner enters their own project costs, organisation details and funding details. You cannot see their detailed finances, so you cannot do it for them. Academic partners use TRAC.
  • Each partner answers the Project Impact questions. They are not scored, but the brief says each partner must complete them before the application can be submitted.
  • Each partner accepts the terms and conditions for their organisation.
  • Read the brief for the subsidy route. Some competitions use Minimal Financial Assistance and need a completed declaration uploaded as a PDF; you are ineligible above £315,000 over three years. Others use the streamlined Research, Development and Innovation subsidy scheme.
  • Answer the scope question first and hardest. The Innovation Lead decides scope by reading only that answer, and that decision is final.

The night before

Make it complete, not perfect.

  • Check every answer against its word limit in the brief. Limits vary by question: one current brief uses 20, 100, 250 and 400 words. Do not pad with punctuation; deliberately inflating the count is a reason not to assess the application.
  • Remove website addresses from answers where the brief says so.
  • Convert each appendix to the format the brief asks for. A typical rule is a PDF no larger than 10MB, up to two A4 pages, legible at 100% zoom.
  • Check the grant you are requesting sits inside the competition’s cost and grant limits. Outside them, the application is made ineligible.
  • Mark every section complete, and confirm every partner has completed their assigned sections.
  • If you used generative AI, be transparent about it, as UKRI’s policy expects. It does not affect assessment, but invented figures, partners or evidence are your responsibility.

The 60 minutes before 11:00am

Submit with time to spare.

  • Submit now. You can reopen a submitted application and change it, as long as you resubmit before the deadline.
  • If the system will not let you submit, contact Innovate UK immediately so the problem is logged before the deadline. Only a fault on their side, such as the service being down for a considerable time just before the deadline, gets an application progressed.
  • Do not count on an extension for your own problems. Poor internet, poor equipment, unfinished partner sections, unaccepted partner terms and incomplete partner costs are all listed as reasons that will not be accepted.

The last 5 minutes

Leave it alone.

  • If you reopened the application to fix something, make sure you resubmitted it. A reopened application that is not resubmitted by the deadline has not been submitted.
  • Confirm from your dashboard that it was submitted, then stop editing. At 11:00am the competition closes automatically and late submissions are not discussed.

After you submit

A competition manager checks eligibility first: that you are a UK registered business, that consortium, cost, grant and duration limits are met, and that answers are of sufficient quality and length. The Innovation Lead then checks scope by reading only your scope answer. If either check fails, the lead applicant is emailed the reasons and the application goes no further.

Applications that pass are scored by independent assessors, usually three in current competitions, though Innovate UK uses five, three or one depending on the competition. They are ranked by average score before a portfolio review and a funders' panel. The decision arrives by email, with feedback on your dashboard where it is offered. There is no right of appeal. The brief gives the decision date: for the Measurement and Sensing pilot closing on 7 October 2026, applicants are told by 18 December 2026.

Competitions closing soon

Examples open on 2 October 2026, from the government's Find a Grant service, which republishes Innovate UK briefs. Check the brief itself before relying on any date.

If you have a draft and a few days

The most useful thing you can do with a draft and three days left is get it read against the brief by someone who has not written it. We do that for a fixed £250 Full Assessment: each answer scored against the published criteria, with the gaps and what to change, in writing. Our Innovate UK tips cover what to write; this page covers getting it in on time.

Questions people ask

What time do Innovate UK competitions close?

Most close at 11:00am UK time on the closing date, and the brief states it clearly if a competition is different. The competition closes automatically at that moment and Innovate UK will not discuss late submissions. Treat 11:00am, not midnight, as the deadline, and aim to submit at least an hour before it.

Can I edit my Innovate UK application after submitting?

Yes, until the deadline. You can reopen a submitted application, change it and resubmit it, but it must be resubmitted before the competition closes. A reopened application that is not resubmitted in time counts as not submitted, so if you reopen it for a late fix, resubmit straight away.

What if my project partner has not finished their section?

You cannot finish it for them. Each partner completes their own project costs, organisation and funding details, answers the questions assigned to them and accepts the terms and conditions. The lead applicant cannot see partners’ detailed finances. Innovate UK lists incomplete partner sections, unaccepted partner terms and missing partner costs as reasons that will not justify an extension, so chase partners a week out, not on the morning.

What happens if the Innovation Funding Service goes down before the deadline?

Contact Innovate UK before the deadline so the problem is logged. An application is only progressed after the deadline when the fault is on Innovate UK’s side, for example when the service has been down for a considerable time immediately before the deadline. Problems with your own internet connection or equipment are not considered.

Are Innovate UK Smart Grants still open?

No. Innovate UK paused Smart Grants in January 2025 and said there would be no Smart rounds in the 2025/26 financial year. Innovate UK now funds businesses through sector-specific competitions and the Growth Catalyst programme. Every competition in this guide’s list of examples is a sector competition with its own brief, limits and closing date.
