Early-stage founders have more options than most realise, and grants are non-dilutive, so unlike investment they cost no equity. Innovate UK Smart Grants fund innovation projects from around £25,000 upwards and are open to companies of any age, including pre-revenue ones. Innovate UK also runs startup-specific competitions and the Young Innovators programme for founders under 30. Beyond that, R&D tax relief returns a proportion of qualifying development spend, regional growth hubs run smaller grants of £1,000 to £25,000, and Innovation Loans sit between grant and equity. The practical constraints for founders are match funding, usually 30 to 50 per cent of project costs, and payment in arrears, which means you fund the work first and claim it back. Most schemes also require a registered UK company, so sole traders are often ineligible, and incorporating before you apply is usually the cheapest way to fix that.
